Backpacking Must Sees in Asia
If there is one thing backpackers have in common, it is that they want to see as much of the "real" country they are visiting as cheaply as possible. Overly tourist areas are generally off the agenda, although a few tried and tested destinations are a must. Most of the time, backpackers are seeking places the average traveller has never experienced.
Asia is bursting to the seams with hidden gems just waiting to be explored and deciding which ones to visit in the time available is one of the biggest challenges facing backpackers. Do some research before you go and decide in advance which must-sees you are heading for.
One of the first places to head for is the Perhentians, the Malaysian islands off the East Coast. These beautiful islands offer many different activities but no distinct tourist traps are to be seen. With white sands and warm, azure blue sea, you might just be content to while away the hours sunbathing and swimming but there are more energetic things to do.
Snorkelling and diving are amongst the main activities, both opening up an underworld kaleidoscope of colour, life and movement. Several operators work the islands and none of the options are expensive, but you may need to take extra money with you for a lunch stop.
Other activities include a trip to the interior jungle, exploding with wildlife and flora. Alternatively, browse the simple stalls and shops available on the beaches, including crafts, souvenirs and the basics. For ultimate relaxation, it is possible to get a massage on Long Beach.
Whilst in Malaysia make sure you visit Kuala Lumpur. Although this is on every tourist itinerary, it really is a city to experience. With cheap accommodation and fantastic food at throwaway prices, it is a backpacker's paradise. Huge malls, unique shops and partying until late await, as well as many attractions and activities, so don't miss it.
Thailand is well travelled by backpackers, who often start their journey here and branch out to the many neighbouring countries on the readily available transport. The capital, Bangkok attracts many backpackers, particularly in the Banglamphu area. It's busy, noisy, vibrant and full of life and colour, designed to be adored or hated.
The Chang Mai area of Thailand is loved for mountainous green heights that descend into stunning valleys, with the city of the same name sporting hundreds of temples and a culture rich and historical.
South Thailand draws people to its natural beauty of white sands and deep blue, clear seas that surround the coastal region. With islands dotted offshore waiting to be explored it is a backpacker's treasure trove.
For those wanting to escape the madding crowd, go across the border to Laos. More and more backpackers are discovering this Asian gem, although it is still one of the least visited of Asia's countries. With cheap being the operative word, friendly people and stunning scenery, you just can't go wrong.
The south of Don Det is home to 4,000 islands and some of the world's most stunning waterfalls and the inland river of Mekong are home to the rare irrawaady dolphins.
Vang Vieng has a myriad of activities, including tubing on the Nam Song River. For those who like extremes, head to the Than Sam Triangle Limestone Caves for some spectacular caving.
Kayaking along the rivers and coming across beautiful waterfalls are just some of the special adventures awaiting you. The city has been westernised but the surrounds more than make up for that. The town itself is touristy but these ancient ruins are definitely worth a visit.
Cambodia is teeming with lush green jungles on the eastern side and spectacular waterfalls in Ratanakiri and Modulkiri. Sihanoukville is home to the country's only beach so if in need of some sun and sea, head to this southern resort.
For a culture hit visit Battambang, the second largest city but mostly forgotten about. This gives it its laid back and quiet atmosphere, where street vendors do not bother you. Wat Banan with its panoramas and the killing caves of Phnom Sampeau are definitely worth a trip.
Asia is a vast continent with a thousand different destinations just waiting to be enjoyed by the hardy backpacker. If time permits, go further but whatever you do, make sure you take the time to enjoy the places mentioned; you will not be disappointed.
