Tree Planting Work in Canada

Considered a great job for those who know how to do it and a crappy job by those who can't seem to get the hang of it, tree planting isn't for the faint of heart. First year pickers (rookies) might find the start-up expenses steep and the work difficult, but if you stick it out there is some serious money to be made and some very remote countryside to experience.

Getting Started

You have to pay money to make money and this is true in the world of tree planting where you will find yourself paying anywhere from $2000-3000 for the season (about 50-70 days) for equipment, food, travel to your camp, and hotels on days off. Developing a technique for efficient planting will also take some time and you will have to make sure to get the trees in the ground properly so you don't get the axe.

The Work

The work is physically and emotionally draining given the repetitive nature of planting tree after tree for over 8 hours a day over rough terrain. Physical fitness is important as you will have to deal with sore muscles, heat exhaustion and back problems. It is very likely that you'll be working alone all say so dealing with boredom is also a huge task. Fortunately, if you work hard the money is good and provides good motivation. First year pickers can expect to start off making minimum wage but with time $100/day is possible. With extra years comes more money and less expenses because you'll already have the gear.

The Locations

Most tree planting takes place in British Columbia.

The Play

So why tree plant? It is hard work, costs a lot to set up and chances are money won't be that great unless you work a few seasons. To many people, the idea of being out in the Canadian bush with people from all walks of life and a variety of locations is a big draw. If you are able to get on a good camp with high morale, camp fires and sing alongs with an international crowd are common place. If the great outdoors is your thing (as well as helping the envorinment!) and you're not scared off by all the things I've mentioned then maybe it's for you.
