Hungary - Budapest

Yellow Submarine Hostel
56 Terez Krt - (01) 331 9896

Don't go there sister!
I strongly recommend finding elsewhere to stay in Budapest. Not only did they bugger up our booking, the guy who owns it was rude and swore constantly (to his staff and guests!) We actually stayed in one of the apartments which when we arrived, we literally had to wade through an overflown toilet to get to our room, where the only entrance was through the bathroom. So if someone else was taking a shower, we were trapped in our room. To make our expreience even worse, the locked glass door to the dorm adjacent meant we could clearly hear the conversation (and spewing) of our fellow guests who arrived home at 5am.

For meeting some interesting people you'll love it.
I can't understand the bad reviews I've read about Yellow Submarine, after how much of a good time I had there. Yes it wasn't clean, yes doors were falling off, yes I never saw breakfast. But it was cosy and seemed to be buzzing with friendly and interesting bohemian traveller types with all sorts of stories. No one went to clubs - they sat in the kitchen, smoked, shared cheap wine and got drunk together. This is how hostels should be. Stop being so fussy and clean!

Crap.
Do not stay at this hostel, it is quite possibly the worst hostel I have ever stayed in. The facilites were dirty and stank of piss. We were given the dorm which is also the communal TV and internet room, it's fun being woken up at 7am by a queue of people wanting to check their emails. The staff are rude and disorganised, they lost our booking that we had confirmed just 3 days earlier, if you don't give them your passport you have to give them a 20 euro deposit. I'm sure this place is a fire hazard too, it is a tiny flat which has been hastily converted into a hostel. The mens facilities cram two toilets and a shower into a space only really big enough for a bath. It is on the 3rd floor and there is no fire escape. Doors to other people's rooms are covered up with sheets - the security is appalling. And most importantly - for the shit-hole that this place is its not cheap! I've paid a lot less for a lot better.

Scary beds, scary breakfast lady and strange layout.
This hostel is in central Pest, but is somehow quite hard to find. I don't know how long I hovered around the entrance to a porn shop next door before realising I had it wrong. Was pretty glad I did, but what awaiting me inside wasn't much better. The hostel itself is on the second or third floor and it seems that there are other apartment entrances on the way. Once I buzzed through a seemingly endless array of security bells I though I was in the hostel. I paid, and was let outside what I thought was the front door, up some stairs, across a strange bridge-like thing which looked over a huge drop, and into a 6 bedded dorm. There was a kitchen and toilet attached of dubious quality and a door too a double room off ours. The beds were metal and shakey... seemed like death traps. The pillows had buttons and coarse, rope-like patterns all over them leaving some interesting marks in your face in the morning! The breakfast was good but the woman serving it didn't mess around! The weirdest thing was the fact that the common area was actually a dorm room! There was a table, internet kiosk and TV in the room and bunks all around it! Would avoid this place if you have a choice... but if you do have to stay here have a wander around... very strange!
