Hostels
One of the best ways of extending your European holiday is to try to pick up work in backpacker's hostels as you travel around. Many hostels will reward a few hours of work each day with a free night's stay, and a few may also have paid positions available. These jobs are almost always paid under the table, so no visa will be required.

Most available jobs tend to involve cleaning rather than working at reception, but if you stick around in a place long enough and get to know the right people, you might be lucky enough to land something a bit more fun than getting up to your elbows in toilet water.

Finding a job working at a hostel is all about timing. If you happen to show up in a place just as a staff member is leaving, all you'll usually have to do is let the hostel know you're looking to work and it seems like the first to ask will get the job. For general cleaning jobs they don't tend to bother too much with interviews and things, but will usually hire you on the spot. For reception jobs the screening process will likely be a bit more involved and you might even have a bit of competition.
