Hong Kong City Guide

Located on the south coast of China, Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated areas in the world. This is for good reason; as Hong Kong has a fascinating history and an exciting present. It has developed from the 'fragrant harbour' of it's namesake to one of the biggest financial centres of the world and a city of vast architectural significance. With this development, Hong Kong has become a popular destination for holiday makers looking for luxury with a twist.

The city boasts a wonderful 'East meets West' mix of food, shopping and entertainment. Visitors flying to Hong Kong are bound to be taken in by the way it mixes modern living with ancient Chinese traditions. A wonderful example of this principle is in the culinary offerings of the region. Known affectionately as the 'culinary capital' of the whole of Asia; traditional dim sum and Chinese foods are available alongside western haute cuisine. The result is a delicious culinary experience that will take an awful lot of beating.

What first time visitors often don't expect is just how tall Hong Kong is. With more than seven and a half thousand skyscrapers, it is one of the tallest cities in the world. Though this comes from necessity ñ it's a magical site to behold! Squeezed in between the skyscrapers, you'll find an amazing selection of attractions; including the iconic Victoria Harbour, The Peak, which offers stunning views over the city and Disneyland Hong Kong. Disneyland Hong Kong offers some very attractive promotions - making it a very viable alternative to it's sister parks in Paris and Florida.

Also found amongst the skyscrapers are cultural institutions such as the Hong Kong Heritage Museum and the Hong Kong Museum of Art. The former showcases the art, history and culture of the region, while the latter exhibits paintings, calligraphy and sculpture from around the world. Visitors to both museums will get a wonderful sense of how far Hong Kong has come as a city ñ and how much it pays homage to it's varied past.

Renowned as a 'shopper's paradise', visitors will be astounded by the quality of the markets and the shopping districts. To enhance the shopping experience even further, the Hong Kong Tourism Board have introduced the QTS (Quality Tourism Scheme) which accredits shops that meet high standards. This is a very exclusive honour ñ and shops who receive it tend to display their accreditation prominently.

Hong Kong is a wonderful mix of a travel destination. It places traditional Chinese culture alongside modern western influences. It boasts luxury sky-scraping accommodation, shopping fit for even the most discerning fashion lover and heavenly cuisine from a number of influences. Whether you're planning on flying to Hong Kong for a long weekend or a longer break; prepare to fall in love with the city's vibrance and heart.
