With a rich historic and cultural heritage Italy has some of the most beautiful and splendid cities in Europe. Italyís capital, Rome, is filled with ancient monuments which makes it an ideal place to spend your time sightseeing. Some of the best-known attractions include the Colosseum of Rome, the Sistine Chapel, The Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain. Away from the popular tourist trail, it is well worth exploring the cityís gorgeous piazzas, churches, statues, bridges, aqueducts and catacombs. There are also a number of picturesque gardens scattered across the city in which to enjoy those long afternoons.

Italy's other major cities all have an astonishing array of beautiful architectural attractions, museums and unique cultural experiences, and are all worth a visit. And cities such as Rome, Venice, Nice and Milan have large international airports, making them easy to get to for those making flights to Rome from any part of the world. There are also many cheap deals available on flights to Italy so a visit doesnít have to be expensive.

Flights to Pisa, a city in the Tuscany region, can also be found cheaply. Known worldwide for its Leaning Tower (belonging to the city's cathedral) it is also home to more than twenty other historic churches, several palaces and various bridges across the River Arno. With a history going back to the 12th century, the Province of Pisa certainly boasts many priceless photo opportunities.

When in Italy on a budget, it is worth making the most if the countryís extraordinary and extravagant local festivals. There are hundreds of festivals that take place in nearly every city each year. The bright and colorful festivals are spent celebrating the unique culture of the countryís varied districts, and there is always plenty of music, costumes, food and wine on offer.

Outside of the country's great cities there are some truly breathtaking sceneries. Located as it is on a peninsula, Italy also has an extensive coastline that has some of the most stunning beaches in Southern Europe. In the North of the country you can find the stunning Alps, whilst the Apennine Mountains form the Italian Peninsula's backbone, in which there a number of serene secluded lakes and valleys just waiting to be discovered. Italy's largest lake, Lake Garda, is perhaps the country's best known. It is located to the North of the country in between Venice and Milan, and is one of the most beautiful and tranquil places in the country.

Italy's location at the meeting point of the Eurasian Plate and the African Plate, means that it is a volcanic hotspot. There are currently three active volcanoes in the country, Etna, Stromboli and Vesuvius. Vesuvius is famous for the destruction of Pompeii, and the preserved town is a must see tourist attraction that offers a glimpse into the past unlike any other.

As with anywhere, you have to do a bit of your own exploring to fully appreciate all that the country has to offer. But, fortunately, often the best things, especially in the case of Italy, are those that are free.
