I think that the best way to truly experience what a country is like is to live and work there for awhile. Fortunately, Australia participates in the Working Holiday Scheme allowing citizens of several countries to stay in the country and work for up to a year.

If you choose to get one of these visas and work, there are a few more things to sort out than if you were to enter the country on a tourist visa. There are bank accounts to open, taxes to file, and of course you've got the tricky business of actually landing a job.
